In 1993 Peter was cast as Denry Machin in a musical play which Cameron Mackintosh had first produced in 1974. The first try-out production was at the Watermill theatre Newbury directed by Jeremy Sams. In 1994 a bigger production was staged at the Regents Park open air theatre directed by Ian Talbot.
With songs and arrangements by Tony Hatch, additional lyrics by Anthony Drewe and a book by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall it won Peter an Olivier nomination for best actor in a musical. The West End transfer never came but it did play Moscow and toured the UK.
